Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau won the 2008 ALL STAR Baseball Home Run derby last season, but it was Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton who stole the show with 28 home runs in the first round and breaking a record in the effort for most home runs in the first round.

Let’s face it, the All Star game is not for many people, but when I think of the All Star game and all the other activities surrounding it like the Home Run derby, forget about the game or the stunts like the home run derby and look at it as a great showcase for kids to look up to their role models. Well, the clean ones anyway, guys who don’t roid up!

I played many sports as a kid and when I remember the all star game, I didn’t care about the importance of the exhibition game or the outcome; I wanted to see the best players in the game on the same field and be the next sweet Lou Whitaker, Tim Rock Raines or Alan Trammel. When I hear sports radio show host talk about the meaningless all star game of any sports, I just shake my head and say to myself, buddy, it’s not about the results or the importance of the outcome, it’s about kids and teenagers who want to be like their hero and be the next guy like him.

Nevertheless, take any all star game with a grain of salt, don’t get your shorts in a up roar over the outcome and let the kids have their day at the park.
