The CFL Football season is set to kick off on Thursday, July 1st, Canada Day and the offshore sportsbooks have released their CFL OVER/UNDER season wins totals.
The defending champions, Montreal Alouettes are currently penciled in to win 13.5 games this season by the oddsmakers and it’s going to be a tough number to beat, as 3 of their first 4 games are on the road vs. tough western opponents.
The Calgary Stampeders who finished 10-7-1 SU last season, will have to win 12 games for their OVER supporters, as the bookmakers have them winning 11.5 games this season. The Stamps have a favorable schedule out of the gates, but can they depend on Henry Burris to stay healthy all season long, as their back up QB situation has many question marks!
The Toronto Argonauts won 3 football games last season and their new head coach Jim Barker will be depending on ex-Jets QB Cleo Lemon’s to lead his team this season, with Dalton Bell as his back up. The bookmakers have set the over/under season wins total at 4.5 and if there’s one bright spot for the Argos heading into week 1, running back Corey Boyd rushed for 147 yards vs. the Alouettes in their final pre season game.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are changing the culture from top to bottom of their organization, as Joe Mack takes over the GM duties from Brendan Taman, while Paul LaPolice takes over the Head Coaching duties from Mike Kelly who was released in the off season. In fact, fans have reason to cheer for a positive change, gone are QB Michael Bishop and Stefan LeFors are gone and in comes Buck Pierce and Steven Jyles. As stated, the Bombers have hired promising Head Coach Paul LaPolice who used to be the offensive coordinator of the Grey Cup Finalist Saskatchewan Roughriders and they’ve added Kavis Reed as their defensive coordinator.
Furthermore, LaPolice has always had his hand in the offense, so look for him to be a key asset to offensive coordinator Jamie Barresi. On the field, the team vastly improved at the Quarterback position by bringing in injury prone QB Buck Pierce and Steven Jyles. As long as Pierce can stay healthy, I see no reason why this Blue Bombers squad can’t win 10 games this season. Play the OVER 8.5 wins.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have seen their shelves get raided this offseason, as many changes have taken place since the Roughriders lost in the Grey Cup to Montreal last November. Gone are the anchors on defense John Chick and Stevie Baggs. Furthermore, they lost their offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and replaced him with Doug Berry. Furthermore, the Roughriders are going to live by the sword with one experienced QB in Darian Durant, because should he get injured, they don’t have Steven Jyles to lean on, he’s gone to the Blue Bombers!
Furthermore, there’s a big question mark on offensive coordinator Doug Berry who took over the offensive reigns from Paul LaPolice. The two biggest question marks I’m going to put on the Roughriders at the beginning of the season will be on their defense and should QB Darian Durant get hurt, will Ryan Dinwiddie or Cole Berquist be able to adjust to the CFL game? I feel the Roughriders will have an 8-10 season. Play the UNDER 10.5 wins.

The offshore sportsbook have their Canadian Football helmets on, ankles taped and ready to tackle on the 2010 CFL season. The 2009 defending Grey Cup Champions Montreal Alouettes are a +160 to win the 2010 Grey Cup. Meaning, if you wagered $100 on the Alouettes right now to win the Grey Cup, it would net you a return of investment of $160. Nothing earth shattering of a return, but that’s why it’s time to find the right underdog team to cash us a big ticket or give us a great hedging situation come November.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned being a professional sports handicapper is to expect the unexpected in this parity sports betting world. Keep in mind, the Sportsbooks have the financial resources to get the best information and tools possible to create a line and they will play on your infatuation for a good story on Sportscenter or the favorites and that’s why you should separate betting with your heart and start betting with your wallet! The sooner you can separate your love for a team for the love of making money, then you just won half the battle. Too many bettors bet on a team because they love their team or they are from that city and they want to support their “fan loyalty” instead of betting to not lose money!
Here’s some numbers I dug up from the past 5 years from my CFL Betting database and it’s how to look for value when betting on CFL underdogs in the first 4 weeks of the CFL season. Keep in mind, Sportsbooks will always adjust the line to make sure a team doesn’t run away with 4-0 or 5-0 ATS streak to start the season, because they will go broke! What you want to do is look for UNDERDOGS in week 3 who have lost their last 2 games. Especially if the team is from out West! Here’s the numbers.
When any CFL Football team played as an Underdog from June,1 2005 to June,1 2010 and they are coming off a 2 game losing streaks, the UNDERDOG is 32-20-2 (61.5%) against the spread. In fact, the CFL Western division teams are 15-5-0 (75%) ATS in this exact situation, so look for a Western CFL team in this spot come Week 3 or 4.
