CFL Pre-season None-TV Miscue

Ron Raymond There’s no bigger CFL ambassador to the Sportsbooks than yours truly, as I love the direction CFL Commissioner Marc Cohon has taken the CFL in his short tenure at the helm, and how they are reaching out to the regular CFL fan and bringing a new vibe to the league. TSN in my view deserves all the credit on where the CFL is today, as they’re the ones who took the lead about 7 years ago and started the broadcast with their panel of experts and revived Friday Night Football by adding a major sponsor in Wendy’s.

The CFL on TSN is a great partnership, but with the NFL knocking at their biggest markets doorstep and while you have more Canadians following NFL football, the CFL really missed the boat on not televising the first two weeks of the CFL. Let’s face it, NFL team’s start their training camps in July and the CFL pre-season started on June 12th, that leaves less than a month to take advantage of all the media headlines and close to 6 weeks before the NFL starts their pre-season games. How can you afford not to broadcast CFL games during the first two weeks and not even promote the team’s radio stations links on their own CFL.ca website?

What makes great companies and businesses number one in their industry? Paying attention to small detail such as this and recognize your competitors and do whatever it takes to grab your target audiences attention. Sorry Mark, but you dropped the ball during the last 2 weeks, as nobody even knows the CFL has started and it’s time the CFL promotes the preseason like it’s opening day; as your open for business now Commish and it’s time to sell the game before that big white elephant in the room steals them away.

Plus, there’s enough blame to share around, even the Sportsbook missed the boat in week 1 by not posting lines on games, but hopefully things will change next year. Like the old saying goes, the early bird gets the worm.
