CFL Preview Week 3

The CFL is now entering week 3 and the two biggest reasons why teams are winning football games, special teams and teams who have success rushing the football. The CFL has gotten away from running the football from the I-formation, split or wing formation and seeing the QB in the shotgun position 90% of the time is broadcasting to the defense, it’s either a draw or pass.

In my view, CFL football is like watching one big offensive scrimmage, as every team runs the exact offensive systems. In order to be different, you need to have different wrinkles in your offense; I would prefer seeing teams getting their QB more often back under center and running more counters, toss sweeps, draws, leads inside and outside zone running from under center. You don’t see NFL teams running shotgun 90% of the time? Granted, they have an extra down to work with, but seeing the QB in shotgun formation 90% of the time, is leaving your team in a vulnerable position once the cold, rain or snow appears in October and November games. Special teams have made an impact on some games in the first two weeks and it’s going to make coaches think twice about kicking 45 or more yards field goals, because a missed field goal can turn the momentum of a football game around in a heartbeat.

Right now, I’m seeing too many coaches going with the status quo in their decision making and it’s biting them in the butt. How can Marcel Bellefeuille not convert a 1st and goal on the 1 yard line and then throw the football on 3rd down at the goal line?

The biggest surprise so far this season in the CFL is a few things; Darian Durant is proving to be an effecting CFL QB, because having a QB who can run the ball is like having an extra running back on your team. History has taught us, teams who have a Tracy Ham, Damon Allen, Matt Dunnigan, Kerry Joseph or Doug Flutie type QB who can run the football from of a broken play, will lead their team to success.

The top 3 rushing teams in the CFL are Saskatchewan, Winnipeg and Calgary who have a combined record of 5-1! Football is about balance and the sooner you can find balance in your passing and rushing game, success will start knocking on your door.
