The offshore sportsbook have their Canadian Football helmets on, ankles taped and ready to tackle on the 2010 CFL season. The 2009 defending Grey Cup Champions Montreal Alouettes are a +160 to win the 2010 Grey Cup. Meaning, if you wagered $100 on the Alouettes right now to win the Grey Cup, it would net you a return of investment of $160. Nothing earth shattering of a return, but that’s why it’s time to find the right underdog team to cash us a big ticket or give us a great hedging situation come November.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned being a professional sports handicapper is to expect the unexpected in this parity sports betting world. Keep in mind, the Sportsbooks have the financial resources to get the best information and tools possible to create a line and they will play on your infatuation for a good story on Sportscenter or the favorites and that’s why you should separate betting with your heart and start betting with your wallet! The sooner you can separate your love for a team for the love of making money, then you just won half the battle. Too many bettors bet on a team because they love their team or they are from that city and they want to support their “fan loyalty” instead of betting to not lose money!
Here’s some numbers I dug up from the past 5 years from my CFL Betting database and it’s how to look for value when betting on CFL underdogs in the first 4 weeks of the CFL season. Keep in mind, Sportsbooks will always adjust the line to make sure a team doesn’t run away with 4-0 or 5-0 ATS streak to start the season, because they will go broke! What you want to do is look for UNDERDOGS in week 3 who have lost their last 2 games. Especially if the team is from out West! Here’s the numbers.
When any CFL Football team played as an Underdog from June,1 2005 to June,1 2010 and they are coming off a 2 game losing streaks, the UNDERDOG is 32-20-2 (61.5%) against the spread. In fact, the CFL Western division teams are 15-5-0 (75%) ATS in this exact situation, so look for a Western CFL team in this spot come Week 3 or 4.
