Ron Raymond's NHL Playoff Predictions

oying their off season, but it’s never the off season for the Sportsbooks, as they’ve released their Futures betting odds on who will win the Stanley Cup in 2010.

Right now, the Red Wings are currently the odds on favorite to win the Stanley Cup at 5 to 1 odds, but they will have to do it without Marian Hossa and Jiri Hudler. Hossa is off to Chicago, while Hudler signed on with the KHL in Russia, but the Red Wings have filed a grievance with the players association, so stay tuned, as he might have to come back and suit up with the Red Wings.

The defending Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh Penguins are +600 to repeat and win the Cup, whereas if you wagered $100 on the Penguins and they win the cup, you would net a $400 profit. Basically, they are 6-1 odds to win the Cup again.

Teams who made a huge splash in the Free Agent signings on July 1st have improved their teams and the Sportsbooks have given them a bit of respect. The Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke was very busy in July, signing some big deals with Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, Colton Orr and a new goalie in Jonas Gustavsson. The Leafs will be a tougher team to play against this season, but the offshore sportsbook don’t see much value in their new free agent pick ups, as they are +6000 to win the Stanley Cup in the 2009 and 2010 season. The Montreal Canadiens picked up Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Hall Gill and a few other players and the Sportsbooks have made them a +3300 underdog to win the Stanley Cup Championship.

One of the best ways to make money at Sports betting is to find a longshot who you believe will make the playoffs and then you start betting against them once the playoff starts. Last year I recommended the Pittsburgh Penguins at +1600 all documented at Hockeypicks.com and we enjoyed a nice payout!

Why did Mike Komisarek go to the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Before I can guess why Mike Komisarek bolted the Montreal Canadiens for their division rivals Maple Leafs, allow me to give you a brief bio, as I feel it will give more credibility in what I’m trying to say. I’ve played sports my whole life, I served 5 years in the Canadian Armed Forces; I’ve won awards in both sports and in the military for showing leadership skills and accelerating in the sports I played. I’ve coached football and have run my own business for the last 13 years.

As a youngster, you’re brainwashed in believing everything is done and accomplished with a team. Nobody is bigger then the team and when your buddy is down, you pick him or her up. It’s my own opinion, Bob Gainey has lost the meaning of the “team” concept, and I still cant’ understand how you can fire one of your best friends in life and still think you can continue in your own job with a clean conscious. The fact he fired his friend Guy Carbonneau and didn’t step down as GM, would have been the ultimate insult to anybody who has been brought up by supporting the team and picking up your teammate.

Which brings me to why Mike Komisarek left the Habs for the Maple Leafs? Put yourself in Mike Komisarek skates, every time you play a team that brings a bit of grit or toughness and the other teams tough guys are taking free liberties at you and nobody on your team is sticking up for you or trying to deflect the fighting or roughing and bring the attention to themselves, why should you stick around knowing you’re not a fighter and doing a job in which you know management should be inserting players in the line up to take care of that stuff.

George Laracque is one of the Habs enforcer, but he was injured most of the season and when he was in the line up, he picked his spots to drop the gloves, he never initiated the altercations. John Muckler said something a few years back that stuck in my mind that gave me a glimpse on what goes inside a dressing room. He said at the time about being the Senators GM; “I don’t like our team toughness, we react to being pushed, but we never initiate the pushing. I like teams who initiate that type of stuff, sort of like being the bully of the block.”

Mike Komisarek in my view, got tired of looking at his line up each night and said “shit, looks like I’m the guy in the line up that’s going to have to drop the gloves again tonight if things get out of hand. I don’t see Plekanec or the Kostityn’s coming to my aid.” Look how Komisarek got rough up against Lucic in the playoffs, one of your top defenseman’s should never be in that position to fight guys (twice) who are use to it, Komisarek is green in that field and should never been put in that role.

When July 1st rolled around and he seen Brian Burke gets tougher and bringing in guys who will take care of that stuff, he bolted to the opportunity to just be a defensemen. Montreal is on the verge of losing all their talented players because their manhood will be challenge on the ice and then once they turn down fights or get slapped around, their ego’s will take a hit and they will lose respect from their teammates in the dressing room, because they will feel bad for the guy or see him as wimpy.

Gainey of all people should not allow his skill players be put in a position of weakness, because once a Gionta, Gomez or Tanguay gets put in a position to fight or stand up for themselves and they don’t, they are done in that room.
